Reggae, the Goffin's Cockatoo

I am the proud bird-mama to a lutino cockatiel, Goffin's cockatoo, and Moluccan cockatoo. I love all three of my birds enormously, and consider each of them to be very special. But my Goffin's, Reggae (she's technically my SO's bird, but she's my little sweetpea) is such a doll. She can always make you smile. Someone once said to me that if you didn't smile or laugh when you met a Goffin's, you're either comatose or dead. I can't help but agree.

Goffins are clowns, and can be extremely playful. They often have this peculiar habit of putting things on their backs, or tossing them over their heads. Reggae will put shredded wood and/or food through her crest, stuff it in her wings, toss it over her head, and crumble it along her feathers as she zips them. She hops straight up and down or struts across the top of her cage when she's really excited. She loves to dance (bounce up and down) and sing off-key wordless songs. She's also very affectionate, sweet, and charming.

Goffin's are cockatoos. Cockatoos are loud and often scream. When we first brought Reggae home, she screamed constantly. With some work and patience, her screaming is limited to a few wake up calls in the morning (after first sunlight), playtime when she's trying to keep up with our Moluccan, and every once in the while in the middle of the night. Sometimes she decides that she wants to play at 2am. Very rarely, but every so often I have to go in and sweet talk her back to bed.

I used to think Reggae was really loud until we brought home Willy, our Moluccan. I no longer think goffins are loud. So loud is relative.

If you have any questions, I could go on for days about any of my birds, but especially Reggae. I'm particularly proud of her sunny disposition. Please email me at parrot@graphon.com.
