Project HAVEN - Avian Rescue Program

What is Project HAVEN?

Project HAVEN is a charitable organization dedicated to finding new permanent homes for lost birds, unwanted birds, disabled or injured birds, pet birds whose owners can no longer provide a suitable home, breeder birds, and some sick birds.

Project HAVEN is not a way to get a free bird. Most of the birds in Project HAVEN are not tame, lovable pets. They may display behavioral or emotional problems, and have health needs. Some Project HAVEN birds are feather pluckers. Others have a strong fear of people. Quality pet stores and reputable breeders still are the best sources for healthy pet birds and lovable hand-raised birds.

Permanent caretakers for Project HAVEN treat these special birds with love and patience, never expecting anything in return. Birds are placed in homes based on their own individual needs.

Too often birds are released or destroyed because their owners know of no other solution. Any healthy bird should have the option to live. No pet bird should suffer the fate of being released to starve or die from exposure. With Project HAVEN there is a better, more humane choice!

What type of homes are birds placed into?

Caretakers in Project HAVEN are warm loving bird people. Many of our people also hand raise birds and other animals as well. But people are different and their homes are different too. Each bird's personal needs are considered in every Project HAVEN placement.

Are there any birds Project HAVEN will not take?

Yes, a few. A bird suffering with a terminal condition may be refused. Diseased, sick and some injured birds are first sent to an avian vet before any decision can be made. By Federal law, native wild birds are referred to licensed wild bird rehabilitators.

Does Project HAVEN have a shelter?

Unlike animal shelters, Project HAVEN enjoys a waiting list of quality homes. There is no shelter. Instead Project HAVEN has evaluators located throughout Dallas/Fort Worth. Needy birds can be easily dropped off or picked up in most metroplex neighborhoods.

Who is running this operation?

Project HAVEN is a committee of advisors and evaluators appointed by the board of the Dallas Cage Bird Society, an affiliate of the American Federation of Aviculture.

Is this a nonprofit group?

At this time Project HAVEN is a charitable organization run by volunteers. The committee currently is working to achieve official 'nonprofit' status with the state of Texas.

How is Project HAVEN funded?

Donations are a major part of the budget and like most animal shelters, there are some minor fees assessed for the adoption of Project HAVEN birds.

If everyone is a volunteer, what are the fees for?

Adoption fees mean veterinarian care. Birds require medical care the same as any other animals. Some birds that might otherwise be destroyed are able to enter Project HAVEN and get needed medical care.

What is meant by permanent homes?

Birds can live a long time and while no one can promise to provide a home forever, the adopting caretakers in Project HAVEN come very close.

What happens when a caretaker can no longer provide a home?

It is not always known, birds sometimes must move away with their people. However, in most cases, the birds should be returned to Project HAVEN to be placed in another kind and caring home. The selling of Project HAVEN birds is prohibited.

Can the relinquishing owner have a say in the placement?

Surrendering owners will give up all rights and claims to the birds. However, surrendering owners may make certain reasonable conditions regarding the birds upon the release such as: naming an individual caretaker, specifying a reasonable adoption procedure, requesting that certain birds be kept together.

What can I do to help?

Donations of money, equipment, feed, or time are always welcome. The more resources Project HAVEN has, the more birds the program can save.

Who can become a caretaker for Project HAVEN?

All bird lovers are eligible to fill out applications, which are subject to approval by the Project HAVEN committee.
