Foundling
by Antonia Stampfel
This article originally appeared in SQUAWK, the newsletter of the Big Apple Bird Association and is reprinted with permission.
She came in
on a shaft of winter sunlight
when I opened my door in the morning,
Drawn, no doubt,
by the sound of happy birds
in my bird room.
Too thin by far,
and in ragged condition
still she sits trustingly in my hand.
She's shivering slightly -- no broken bones --
With love and proper care, she'll soon grow strong.
Don't worry, birdy girl,
You're home.
