A "Duetto"
by Antonia Stampfel
This article originally appeared in SQUAWK, the newsletter of the Big Apple Bird Association and is reprinted with permission.
Mr. Twinkle's Song
The grey of your breast
puts the moonlight to shame.
Your wings are the green
of the new leaves in spring.
Your dear little beak
is an apricot flame.
And you are the heart
of the song that I sing.
We're two different species
I know this is true.
But nevertheless
I dream only of you.
Scooter's Reply
Is that you on my cage again?
Is that you coming in my door?
I don't recall inviting you
To perch with me. And furthermore,
You'd better pack your wings and go
Unless you want to lose a Toe.
