Bite My Gypsy Earrings
by Antonia Stampfel
This article originally appeared in SQUAWK, the newsletter of the Big Apple Bird Association and is reprinted with permission.
Background to Song:
Hi -
A couple of years ago, my friends bought a cockatiel for their 7-year-old daughter, & I just went over to look at it. Someone plunked the bird onto my shouler, & my life changed forever.
Sadly, Yellow did not live very long, but the wonder I felt when he first perched on my shoulder is still with me, & will probably remain for the rest of my life.
This is a song, though the music has not been written down. I hope you can use it.
Love,
Antonia Stampfel
This song is dedicated to the memory of Yellow Crunchy Button, a cockatiel
Bite My Gypsy Earrings
Antonia Stampfel
Verse 1:
I felt your heart beat rapidly
Warm feathers on my shoulder
I was confused - what made me think
that you'd be so much colder?
You took a chance - well, so did I
Amazing how we grew
The way you got so "tall" to me
I got so high on you
Chorus:
I wore my Gypsy earrings just for you
Don't you love the way they sparkle
like the sunlight on the dew?
I barely got to know you
I had so much to learn
You slipped right past me
while my back was turned.
Verse 2:
Well things have changed - you made a change
Much more than I expected.
My little crunchy button friend
On this I stand corrected
And nothing's ever lived in vain
And nothing's gone to waste
And how I'd love once more to see
Your silly little face
Repeat Chorus
