Exotic Definitions (More Tongue in Beak Humor)

by Nora N. Stanley

This article originally appeared in SQUAWK, the newsletter of the Big Apple Bird Association and is reprinted with permission.

I Ching - The act of throwing toys or food in a seemingly random pattern; a parrot can then lean over and decide on a future course of action (e.g., scream, bite owner, throw more stuff) based on what it sees.

Origami - The art of folding freshly spread newspapers so that a clean cage will become soiled in the most efficient manner.

Parrotitis - A human brain infection characterized by an insatiable desire to acquire the most psittacines, with attendant supplies and duets. Patients appear to function in society, but tend to exhibit flocking behavior in bird clubs. Afflicted patients frequently mutter: "One is not enough."

Fringe - The remains of your most expensive books. (Cheap novels are universally ignored.) Dingleberry - A down feather stuck to the end of your toughest bird's beak, making him look rather silly.

Bouquet Garni - Healthy foods your bird plunks into his waterbowl.

Lucky Parrot Head Key Chain - What you want to do with your ornery bird when he doesn't have a dingleberry stuck to his nose.
